Calderdale's Tallest Structure Restored to Former Glory

Calderdale's Tallest Structure Restored to Former Glory

Work has now been completed on one of Halifax's most significant landmarks.

Calderdale Council worked with specialist restoration company, Stone Technical Services from Darlington, County Durham, to restore Wainhouse Tower to its former glory and carry out a variety of improvements to preserve it for the future.

From June 2007, Stone carried out a range of work on Calderdale's tallest structure including the conservation and restoration of masonry on the carved upper tower ornate stone as well as the lime mortar pointing of the structure. Stone also designed stainless steel flashings to form rainwater gullies.

In addition, the company carried out further restoration and specialist masonry repairs on the Halifax landmark towards the end of 2007 including the renewal of the upper viewing platform, lime mortar repointing, the fitting of new window guards, the installation of a specialist rainwater system and storm gullies and the replacement of specialist lead and stainless steel.

All of the work was carried out by hand without machinery because of the delicate nature of the structure.

Wainhouse Tower dates back to the 1870s and its viewing platform can be reached by 400 steps up the 253 feet structure.

Stone Technical Services specialises in the restoration of churches and historic buildings as well as high level maintenance, safety systems, lightning conductor installation and services related to industrial steeplejacks.

The company regularly carries out specialist projects for English Heritage, the National Trust and local councils and is the appointed contractor managing structural and high level maintenance repairs and lightning conductor installations at St Paul's Cathedral.

This project, funded by Calderdale Council, took six months to complete and cost in the region of £400,000.

David Stone commented:
"The height of Wainhouse Tower and the delicate nature of the repair work required meant that the whole project had to be executed carefully to ensure that the structure was preserved and protected for the future. Our team of skilled workers at Stone often work on projects such as this so our expertise in dealing with such a prominent building meant that we could complete the work efficiently so that Wainhouse Tower can be enjoyed once more by the public."

John Catanach, building surveyor from Calderdale Council added:
"Stone Technical Services' professional approach resulted in a very smooth and well executed project. The works undertaken mean that the tower will remain part of the Calderdale landscape for future generations."
