Sudley Infant School

Sudley Infant School lightning protection

Stone Technical Services’ Lightning Protection division was selected as the preferred contractor for this project following a stringent tender process with Liverpool City Council.

The tender process was also overseen by Liverpool 2020, the organisation working on major developments to improve life for millions of people across Merseyside.

Sudley Infant School opened early in the 1900s and was in need of improvement to many areas, one of which was the lightning protection.

During the tender process, it was deemed essential for the chosen contractor to have an extensive knowledge and experience of the provision of services to the education sector – a qualification that Stone Technical Services has.

The lightning protection project for Sudley Infant School involved the design, build and install of an effective system to protect pupils, staff, visitors and the building and contents from the effects of potential lightning strikes.

In order to prevent any disruption to the building and its pupils, we completed the project in just six days during the school holidays. We also provided our own high-level access solutions for the install including ladders, scaffold towers and a man-safe system.

Throughout the duration of the project, our experienced engineers were given responsibility for security at the school and provided with full access to the building and its grounds as required.

The installation project was completed efficiently, within the timescale and with no disruption to the school.

Following a post-works meeting with the relevant involved parties, the project was signed off and Stone Technical Services secured a further three year contract with the school to return for testing purposes. This is to ensure that the installed system remains in good working order and meets with all necessary safety standards.

Of the project, Managing Director of Stone Technical Services, Dave Stone, said: “Lightning protection is vital and particularly important for public buildings, such as schools.

"There are a number of sensitivities that had to be taken into account, not least being able to carry out the work within the school holidays.

"With this type of project, it’s important to be able to offer bespoke solutions and work with a number of organisations to meet their criteria and budgets."

"We found Stone Technical Services to be professional, friendly and helpful.

During pre-start meetings, the minutes produced were clear with both parties working well together during the project. All workers on site were courteous and competent and the job was completed within the allocated time.

We would therefore have no hesitation in recommending the company for future projects."
