King James Cupola

King James Academy in Bishop Auckland is well known for being the school that Stan Laurel attended.

The Grade II-listed building is currently undergoing a £10.5 million improvement project and, as part of that, STS is carrying out the refurbishment and preservation of high level masonry and woodwork, as well as stonework improvements.

Working with Sir Robert McAlpine, STS Restoration has been completing a range of renovations to preserve the building.

The works at King James have comprised of a variety of high level repairs to structural and ornate aspects to four cupolas and also the roof. This element of the project included full decoration and repair/replacement of lead capping, slate repairs and cleaning to all roof elevations.

STS replaced 21 balusters due to erosion, bed joint failure and cracking and also transom, again because of severe erosion and cracking.

Various elevations on the Grade II-listed building required lime mortar pointing works including 230m2 on the academy’s dining block. STS then carried out the re-roofing of the flat roof using green mineral felt with insulation board.

All of the sites' RWP goods required overhauling and repairing, including painting, de-frassing and mortar repairs to various transoms, sills and arrases, and STS has also refurbished and restored the rainwater goods at the academy and re-pointed all of the new lead windows.

In addition, STS created bespoke architrave templated from existing materials and recreated for the balcony pedestals. STS removed spinals and all intricate woodwork and replaced decoration on completion.

Finally, the steps at the site has subsided so STS has removed and re-laid them on a on solid bed, installing replacement stone where removal of ducting has taken place to match existing stone work.
