Stone Technical Services Group Ltd were appointed as the principal contractor for the works to the Grade I listed Chantry Bridge. STS carried out the full refurbishment of 9no spanned bridge arches and wing walls, including scowering works to free-flowing waters which were dammed and boomed allowing our staff to work on the dry river bed. Repositioning and installation of coping stones on parapets and the application of an herbicidal treatment and historic masonry refurbishments.
The project incorporated the introduction of pontoons to the fast-flowing river. This innovation is a specialism of STS, allowing works to be carried out to the infrastructure without the need for intrusive scaffolding and all round a more environmentally friendly procedure.
The project also involved some elements of traffic management which were developed with the client to allow works to be carried out safely and minimise the disruption of commerce and pedestrian obstruction.
Following completion of the works, Wakefield Council has since submitted the project for a national award.
