Stone Technical Services Group Ltd were appointed by Merchant Taylors Hall to carry out the following:
• Removal of the existing copper roof finishes including outlets, chutes, flashings and the like.
• Provision of new copper roof coverings including outlets, chutes, flashings and the like.
• Brickwork repairs including repointing to the internal face of the parapets to all elevations.
• New access ladders at the east end of the roof and provision of access safety line to the north and south parapet gutters.
Stone Technical Services Group Ltd won a competitive tender to assess and develop historical like-for-like removal of the original copper sheeted roof structure, to provided and recover the Great Hall in line with BSEN 1772:1997 ‘Copper and Copper Alloys. Sheet and Strip for Building Purposes’ and British Standard Code of Practice CP143: Part 12:1970 ‘Sheet roof and wall coverings.’
As main contractor, STS provided the necessary design elements for the installation of a covered suspended roof to allow working in inclement weather, including allowances for the additional heritage masons and copper roof installation team.
New access systems were designed and installed with the help of the presiding architects to provide safe access for future maintenance. All works were carried out to strict specification on budget and to tight timescales.
